Special Discussion Marks Abul Hasnat’s Birth Anniversary: ‘Nabiner Shahittya: Shwapna O Shwapnabhongo’

A special literary discussion titled ‘Nabiner Shahittya: Shwapna O Shwapnabhongo’ was held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 5:00 P.M. on the third floor of Bengal Shilpalay in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. This discussion was organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of distinguished poet, essayist, and literary editor Abul Hasnat. The event brought together prominent writers and editors to discuss the literary pursuits of emerging authors and the pivotal role editors play in nurturing new literary voices.

The emergence of young writers has always revitalized the literary landscape with fresh perspectives and creative energy. Editors, alongside literary journals and magazines, play an indispensable role in building meaningful connections between these new voices and readers. Through mentorship, editorial guidance, and sustained encouragement, senior editors have long served as custodians of literary culture. Such efforts help young writers engage with contemporary yet high-quality literary traditions.

Against the backdrop of this idea, the event explored a range of psychological and practical questions surrounding the editorial process—do editors consistently recognise the promise of emerging writers, or do aspirations at times give way to disappointment? These reflections formed the foundation of the day’s thought-provoking discussion.

The discussion featured three distinguished speakers: celebrated contemporary novelist Imdadul Haq Milan, poet and Literary Editor of The Daily Sangbad, Obayed Akash, and editor of Ebong Boi, Faisal Ahmed. In their remarks, the speakers paid tribute to the late Abul Hasnat’s remarkable editorial legacy and his exceptional contribution to mentoring generations of young writers. They also reflected on the literary aspirations and potential of current emerging authors. Their reflections also address certain challenges contemporary editors face in upholding literary standards in an evolving cultural landscape.

The programme also included a screening of a documentary on the life and work of Abul Hasnat. The event was attended by poets, writers, editors, literary figures, and literature enthusiasts from across the country.
