3 of a family burnt in Narayanganj explosion

Three of a family suffered major burn injuries in a gas explosion at a house in Kuripara of Narayanganj's Bandar upazila this morning.

The injured were identified as Maidul Islam, 24, his wife Beauty Akter, 22, and their 8-year-old son Maruf, confirmed fire officials.

They were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Quoting neighbours who brought them to the hospital, Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute's emergency department, said the explosion occurred around 6:30am on Friday (August 7) when Maidul struck a match to light a cigarette at the house.

Maidul suffered burns to 85 percent of his body, while Beauty and Maruf suffered burns to 90 percent and 80 percent of their bodies respectively.

All three are in critical condition, he said.

Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Abdullah Al Arefin, who visited the spot, said after preliminary inquiry they suspected that gas had accumulated inside the room due to a leak leading to the blast.
