Two schoolboys killed as truck runs over motorcycle in Dhamrai

Two schoolboys were killed and another teenager critically injured after a soil-laden dump truck ran over a motorcycle in Dhamrai, on the outskirts of Dhaka, this afternoon.

The incident happened around 3:00pm today on the Dhamrai-Kaliakair Bypass road near Aingan Bridge in Dhamrai municipality.

The deceased were identified as Mahim, 16, son of Mohammad Ali; and Anik, 13, son of Rubel Hossain. Both were residents of Laruakundu village in Dhamrai and students of Savar Laboratory School, said police.

The injured, Ataur Rahman, 15, son of Abu Taleb, was taken to a hospital in Dhaka with critical injuries.

Witnesses said the truck was travelling towards Kaliakair when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw tried to overtake it. A motorcycle carrying the three teenagers, following the auto-rickshaw, also tried to overtake but moved into the truck’s path. The truck hit the motorcycle from behind, throwing the riders onto the road, and then ran over them before driving off. Mahim and Anik died on the spot.

Ataur was initially taken to a local hospital but later referred to Dhaka as his condition worsened.

Sub-Inspector Nannu Mondol of Dhamrai Police Station said an unidentified truck hit the motorcycle, killing Mahim and Anik and leaving Ataur Rahman seriously injured. “The injured boy was first taken to Dhamrai City Hospital before being shifted to Dhaka for better treatment,” he said.

Police said evidence had been collected from the scene and efforts were underway to trace the truck and arrest its driver.
