3 arrested for shaving teenage baul’s head in Bogura
Some locals allegedly beat up a teenager and shaved his head for "singing baul songs and lighting candles in the house" in Bogura's Shibganj upazila.
Md Mehedi Hassan (16), of Jurimajhpara village, filed a case with Shibganj Police Station last night against five named and two unidentified people.
Following the case, police arrested Md Mezbaul Islam (52), teacher of a local high school, and his two associates Shafiul Islam Khokon (55), and Tarek Rahman (20).
According to the case statement, Mehedi sings baul songs, and following tradition, he kept his long hair and wore white.
Some locals insulted baul singers who were with Mehedi.
"When I protested this, they got angry and around 10:00pm on September 10, they came to my house and woke me up," Mehedi said in the case statement.
Accused Shafiul Islam Khokon ordered his associates "to shave my head," he said.
"They started to shave my head using a trimmer. When I was screaming, they beat me up. They fled when they saw my neighbours arriving," he said.
"They threatened that if I sing baul songs again, they will force me to leave the village," he added.
When contacted, Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam confirmed the incident and said, "We arrested three accused after Mehedi filed the case yesterday. Today, we will produce them at the court."
"We are trying to arrest the other accused," he said.
"Singing baul songs and wearing white clothes are not an offence. And for this, no one can insult someone, and they certainly can't shave his or her head," the OC said.
