ICT sends former Awami League MP Zafar Alam to jail in crimes against humanity case

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 today sent former Awami League MP Zafar Alam to jail after formally recording his arrest in a crimes against humanity case over the killings of two opposition activists during the party’s rule.

The prosecution alleged that Zafar, a former lawmaker for Cox’s Bazar-1, was involved in the killings of a BNP activist and a Jamaat-e-Islami activist as part of a systematic campaign to suppress dissent.

The Jamaat activist was allegedly killed by associates of Zafar after the janaza of Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, while the BNP activist was allegedly killed after the abduction of BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, according to the prosecution.

The prosecution said the killings were part of a broader plan to suppress civilians holding views opposed to the then government and Zafar exercised command responsibility over his associates.
