UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk yesterday voiced distress that the environment for Sunday’s polls was marred by violence and repression of opposition candidates and supporters.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said the Election Commission has provided an accurate percentage of the voter turnout in the 12th national polls held Sunday, and it welcomes anyone who wants to challenge the data.

A section of the foreign observers yesterday said the polls were by and large held in a free and fair manner, but lamented the boycott of the major opposition BNP and the incidents of electoral violence.
