The government is set to slash allocations for development spending by 12.5 percent in the current fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26), as the originally allocated fund remains largely unspent in the first five months.

The interim government is set to slash the development budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2025-26 by 14 percent year-on-year, as it struggles with limited fiscal space and steers away from costly mega-projects.

The government is currently faced with a lack of funds, evidenced by a reduction in allocations it provided from the exchequer for the upcoming Annual Development Programme (ADP), said Fahmida Khatun, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue.

It seems the government is doing an about-turn from the austerity stance taken at the start of the fiscal year.

The government managed to implement 85 per cent of the budget in the last fiscal year despite spending a huge amount as subsidies and incentives, raising questions about the trend of unveiling bigger budgets year after year.  

The pace of implementation of development schemes of the government hit a three-year high in May of the outgoing fiscal year with Jatiya Sangsad secretariat topping the list while the Finance Division sits at the bottom.

The government is set to fix the size of the development budget at Tk 202,721 crore for 2019-20, up 21.39 percent from the current fiscal year, as it looks to mobilise a higher amount of foreign aid piled up in the pipeline.
