Bangladesh witnessed a massive growth in fish production in the last 12 years through aquaculture driven by a surge in yield of three fish varieties, namely pangas, tilapia and climbing fish (koi).

Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in fish and meat production, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayon Chandra Chanda said yesterday.

The country's fish production has almost doubled in just over a decade as fish farming becomes even more popular. According to data from the Department of Fisheries, farmed fish production was 2 million tonnes in 2013-14 fiscal year. This was only 0.8 million tonnes in 2001-02.
