Gas supply has returned to the level seen before the crisis began on July 21, as LNG output from the two floating terminals in Moheshkhali rose to nearly their regular volume for the first time in almost two months.

The country’s leading commodity importers and processors have urged the government to ensure uninterrupted gas and electricity supply to their factories, warning that disruption could trigger serious supply-chain problems nationwide

Bangladesh’s gas supply situation has improved from the severe shortages seen last week, but industries are yet to see a meaningful recovery as a larger share of the limited supply is now being diverted to power plants.

Gas supply to industries increased in the first four months of the current year, and the supply of this key energy source to factories will increase further from today, said state-run Petrobangla.

The central bank also directed banks to ensure mandatory clearance certificates from utility service providers before approving loans.

Currently, the gas supply stands at approximately 2,500 million standard cubic feet per day (mmcfd), falling short of the demand, which is at 3,800 mmcfd.

Delta Agro Food Industries, a joint venture of Seacom Group and Samuda Group, has set up a factory in Narayanganj at an investment of more than Tk 1,200 crore one and a half years ago. 

The latest hike of gas prices undoubtedly spells trouble for industries as they will try to shift the burden onto consumers by raising product prices, which will boomerang onto them by eating away at their competitiveness in international markets. 

Consumers in southern part of Dhaka city and adjoining areas, and Narayanganj and Munshiganj may experience disruption or low pressure in gas supply for a week - from tomorrow (November 6) to November 12 - due to technical work in the gas transmission line.

Textile mill owners yesterday said they were willing to shell out 40 percent more for gas if the supply was uninterrupted. Supply disruptions were costing the industry crores of taka, they said.

The acute gas crisis, which has been plaguing the industrial sector and households, is unlikely to see a drastic improvement anytime soon.

There will be no gas supply in some areas of Dhaka for 11 hours from 2pm today (October 1, 2022) due to emergency repair work of the pipeline.

Gas supply — both residential and commercial —in Sadar and Sarail upazilas of Brahmanbaria has been suspended from early today (July 31, 2022) due to pipeline relocation work under the four-lane highway upgradation project from Ashuganj river port to Akhaura land port.

Around 102 factories in greater Rangpur, including 28 at the Uttara EPZ in Nilphamari, will likely get gas connections by December 2023 as the “Construction of Bogura-Rangpur-Saidpur Gas Transmission Pipeline Project” should be complete by then.
