In a bid to prevent road crash fatalities, all public and private hospitals will be legally obligated to provide immediate treatment to road crash victims without asking preliminary questions under the proposed “Road Safety Act, 2026”.

The National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) is struggling to manage an overwhelming number of patients, far exceeding its 1,000-bed capacity, leaving many to receive treatment on the floor or in overcrowded corridors.

Questions have been raised by road safety activists as to whether a human life can be valued at only Tk 5 lakh.

Over 80 percent of the 7,713 road crash victims last year were aged between 18 and 65 years, the most productive segment of the population, Road Safety Foundation said yesterday.
