Bangladeshi filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain’s "The Difficult Bride" has won the Independent Film Critics Award, Premio Bisato d’Oro, at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, ahead of the festival’s official awards ceremony.

Sarees, dancing, cheers and applause — the screening of Rubaiyat Hossain’s “The Difficult Bride” at the Venice International Film Festival turned into a celebration of Bangladeshi cinema on the prestigious international stage.

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival is set to mark a historic moment for Bangladeshi cinema today, as Rubaiyat Hossain’s "The Difficult Bride" makes its world premiere in the Orizzonti Competition section.

"The Difficult Bride" follows Zaineen, a young bride-to-be who arrives to prepare for her wedding. As the day unfolds, she becomes entangled in an increasingly unsettling world where beauty, the body, faith, memory and fear collide.

After making history as the first Bangladeshi feature film to be selected for the Orizzonti section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, National Film Award-winning director Rubaiyat Hossain's "The Difficult Bride" has achieved another major milestone, earning a place in the official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

When Rubaiyat Hossain's "The Difficult Bride" made history as the first feature-length film from Bangladesh to compete at the Venice International Film Festival, it wasn't just the film that had everyone talking. Curiosity quickly turned to its leading lady, Zaineen Karim Chowdhury, who, interestingly, shares her first name with the character she plays. One question lingered above all else: what made Rubaiyat believe that Zaineen was her "Difficult Bride"?

For filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain, “The Difficult Bride” is more than a psychological horror film. It is the culmination of nearly two decades of writing, years of meticulous preparation, and a childhood memory that refused to fade.

The psychological horror film will have its world premiere at the festival, which will be held in Venice, Italy, from September 2 to 12.

Director Rubaiyat Hossain has been developing her film “The Difficult Bride” for many years. She travelled to various international film festivals with the screenplay and secured global funding. Now, the cast has finally been announced.

Young Bangladeshi filmmaker Maksud Hossain has been selected for Berlinale Talents, a prestigious platform under the Berlin International Film Festival that recognises emerging filmmakers, producers, actors, cinematographers, and industry professionals making strides in their respective fields.

Since 1975, the National Film Awards in Bangladesh have been granted to acknowledge outstanding achievements across diverse aspects of the film industry. Over the course of 48 years, numerous individuals have been honoured in different categories. Today, at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), the National Film Awards 2022 will be conferred upon a recipient, marking only the second instance in the history of these awards where a woman attains such a prestigious recognition.

The actress, who won the Best Actress award at Festival de Saint -Jean-de-Luz, in France in 2019 for Rubaiyat Hossain’s ‘Shimu’, was announced the Best Actress in the National Film Award (2022) for her portrayal of her namesake this year. She will be taking home the award jointly with Jaya Ahsan ('Beauty Circus').

Rubaiyat Hossain directed “Under Construction” will have the honour of being the opening film at the 14th Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) to be held from January 14 to 22, 2016.
