A record number of Japanese players are in the Premier League this season, with clubs attracted by their proven quality, value for money and the "very little risk" involved in signing them.

Aston Villa announced on Wednesday they have signed Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and Italian defender Matteo Ruggeri as they strengthen their defensive options ahead of the Champions League.

Zion Suzuki has had to overcome costly mistakes and racist abuse on the way to becoming the most expensive Japanese goalkeeper in history.
