RU suspends 18 students over ragging, forgery

Rajshahi University (RU) authorities have suspended 18 students for one year each on different grounds, including alleged involvement in ragging and forging official seals and signatures.

RU Vice-Chancellor Prof Faridul Islam confirmed the development to The Daily Star this afternoon.

The VC said the university's disciplinary sub-committee presented the allegations, along with evidence, at the 549th Syndicate meeting on Tuesday. The Syndicate then reviewed the cases and decided on varying penalties.

Of the 18 students, 14 were suspended for one year for ragging, while another student received the same punishment for attacking a senior. Three others were suspended for one year for allegedly forging official seals and signatures, the VC said.

Besides, the residential seats of two students were cancelled, while 76 others were issued strict warnings for various reasons.

The vice-chancellor said the students who received warnings had been given the strongest possible warning.

“If we find that they are involved in such activities again, stricter action will be taken against them,” he added.
