University student dies after being found critically injured in Khulna
A 22-year-old university student died after being found critically injured at a residential building in Khulna's Harintana area early today.
The deceased, Md Azmal Hossain, was a first-semester student of the Department of English at private North Western University in Khulna. He was from Darshana in Chuadanga and lived in a mess in Harintana.
According to locals, several people were allegedly beating Azmal on the rooftop of a four-storey building on Mosque Lane, adjacent to the Hall Road area of Khulna University. He was later found critically injured on the ground.
Several locals said they came outside after reportedly hearing shouting and screaming from the building. They allegedly saw several people beating a man on the roof before he was found lying on the ground.
The locals said the injured man asked for water, which they gave him. Several people then took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a university ambulance.
Hospital sources said 20 to 25 youths, who identified themselves as students of Khulna University, brought Azmal to the hospital. The youths told hospital authorities that Azmal had been injured after jumping from the fourth floor while fleeing after allegedly committing a theft.
Dr Md Konok Hossain, assistant registrar of the Surgery Department at KMCH, said, “Multiple injury marks were found on his body. His hair had also been cut. We initially suspect that he died due to excessive blood loss. More details can be provided after the autopsy,” he said.
Md Iqbal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Harintana Police Station, said Azmal’s family had informed the police, and preparations were underway to file a case. Legal action would be taken after the case is filed, he said.
Prof Dr Md Salauddin, director of Student Affairs at Khulna University, said, “We have been informed about the incident. Since it took place outside the university area, the administration responsible for the area will investigate the matter.”
