Home minister should resign for failing to ensure security: Nahid

Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam today said the death of the missing son of a Comilla University teacher was not an isolated incident and demanded the resignation of home minister for failing to ensure security.

He said thousands of children have gone missing during the current government's tenure, many of whom have yet to return home.

“There is no security among the public,” he said at a rally of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance in the Matidali area of Bogura as part of their Dhaka-Rangpur long march.

Nahid further said they were conducting the long march to demand the implementation of the public mandate given in the 13th national election.

Addressing BNP, he said, "Regarding the public mandate you gave in February's [2026] election through two votes, they [BNP] stole the result of one vote and formed the government through theft. Now, they are denying the result of the other vote and have formed a constitution amendment committee."

Addressing the attending supporters, Nahid said, "We have come to promise you that even though we could not protect one of your election results, we will implement the verdict you gave in the public vote on this soil, even at the cost of our lives. For that, we need your cooperation once more."

He said, "Many people question why this long march is taking place against a government that has been in power for only seven months. Because the Awami League was not stopped at the beginning, the people of Bangladesh had to live a miserable life for 16 years. Therefore, we have learned from the past. We will not give them more time this time. To get more time, the mandate of the public vote must be implemented."

"Today, I saw that a teacher from Comilla University had her child missing for two days, and the child was found dead. We pray to Allah for her child," he added.

He said, “Mothers and sisters have no security when walking on the streets. Will the home minister not take responsibility for all of this? He should. We believe the home minister should resign."

Addressing the people of Bogura, Nahid said, "We are heading to Rangpur. Be prepared. For the upcoming mass uprising and mass movement, we believe that you, from Bogura, will build an irresistible movement against these usurpers and extortionists."

He called upon the public to unite in support of the 11-party alliance's 8-point demands.
