Kabaddi team begin Asian Games with thrilling win over South Korea

Bangladesh men's kabaddi team began their Asian Games campaign on a high note with a nerve-wracking 39-35 victory over South Korea in their opening Group A match in Japan today.

Bangladesh made a strong start, taking a narrow 17-16 lead into half-time before adding 22 points in the second half to secure a memorable victory over their South Korean opponents.

The most encouraging aspect of the performance was Bangladesh's ability to force South Korea all out twice, a feat that was once rare for the red and green. Bangladesh also collected six bonus points on their way to the four-point victory.

Three-time Asian Games silver medallists Bangladesh have been without a medal at the continental multi-sport event for the past 20 years, since winning bronze at the 2006 Doha Games.

The victory over South Korea has put Bangladesh in a strong position in their bid to reach the semifinals, but they still have plenty of work to do in a demanding Group A.

They will face Chinese Taipei in their second match today, with the side seeking revenge after losing to them at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou. Bangladesh will then take on Japan tomorrow before facing defending champions and gold-medal favourites India on September 23.
