'Gunmen abduct' AL leader in Lalmatia

A ruling party leader was picked up at gunpoint in filmy-style from Dhaka’s Lalmatia area under broad daylight – what appears to be a kidnapping attempt so far.

According to primary reports, “missing” Parvez Hossain Sarker was a former Upazila Parishad chairman of Comilla’s Titas upazila with Awami League’s ticket.

Mrittunjay Dey, assistant commissioner (Mohammadpur) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, cited witnesses to tell The Daily Star he was forcefully picked up under broad daylight.

He quoted witnesses to say further, Sarker was returning from Lalmatia Minar Mosque after Friday Jumma prayers when a group of men tucked him away in a car at the gates of his house.

Describing the same, Tahmina Afroz, Parvez’s wife, told The Daily Star that her husband was trying to secure a nomination from Awami League to contest for Comilla-2 constituency in the next general election.

Fahad Bhuiyan, cousin to Parvez, told The Daily Star that four men in plainclothes, with walkie-talkies and guns, picked him up from near the gates of the house. Describing further, he said that the gunmen were all around 35 years in age.

Details are still sketchy at this moment, but police are looking into the matter.
