Aunt May actress Rosemary Harris celebrates 99th birthday
British actress Rosemary Harris, best known to a generation of fans as Aunt May in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, has turned 99.
Harris celebrated her birthday on September 19, surrounded by family. Her daughter, actress Jennifer Ehle, shared photos from the celebration on Instagram. The pictures showed Harris sitting at a table with a dessert and a single candle, surrounded by her loved ones.
Ehle shared a heartfelt message alongside the photos. She wrote, “Mum, you are a wonder. What a privilege to witness you on your 99th with all your marbles most soundly iridescent and sparklingly intact.”
For millions of fans, Harris remains closely associated with Aunt May, the woman who raised Peter Parker. She played the character in “Spider-Man” (2002), “Spider-Man 2” (2004) and “Spider-Man 3” (2007), opposite Tobey Maguire. One of her most memorable moments came in “Spider-Man 2”, when Aunt May gives Peter a speech about what it means to be a hero.
However, Harris’s career spans several decades and goes far beyond the superhero franchise. She made her professional acting debut in the late 1940s and made her Broadway debut in 1952.
She won a Tony Award in 1966 for her performance in “The Lion in Winter”. She also received an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. In 1994, she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Tom & Viv”.
Harris returned to Broadway at the age of 91, playing Mrs Higgins in “My Fair Lady” in 2018.
The actress has never officially announced her retirement. Her most recent film credit is “Oscar Wilde About America”, released in 2024. She now lives in North Carolina and has largely stayed away from the spotlight.
Her 99th birthday has given fans a rare glimpse of the veteran actress as she approaches her 100th birthday, a milestone few actors of her generation have reached.
