How Taylor Swift’s surprise Emmys cameo came together

Taylor Swift’s surprise appearance at this year’s Emmy Awards came from an idea developed after host Mariska Hargitay’s writers began brainstorming ways to include the pop star in the show.

Executive producer Dionne Harmon said Hargitay and Swift are genuine friends, which helped bring the collaboration together.

The pre-recorded parody of Hargitay’s “Law & Order: SVU” featured Swift playing a detective trying to decode clues about whether she would appear at the Emmys. Producer Jesse Collins said Swift liked the script and contributed ideas, particularly around the hidden references or “Easter eggs” in the sketch.

The segment was filmed secretly at the “SVU” set in late August. Producers said only a small group knew about the shoot to protect the surprise.

Swift, a longtime fan of the show, also suggested including her cat Olivia Benson, named after Hargitay’s character. The real-life cat appeared with Hargitay at the end of the sketch.

Hargitay’s connections also helped bring other guests to the ceremony, including New York Knicks player Jalen Brunson, who appeared in the opening segment. Producers said her popularity helped attract a wide range of participants to the show.
