Hadi murder prime accused Faisal Karim, wife face Tk 1.93cr laundering case
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police has filed a money laundering case against Faisal Karim Masud alias Rahul alias Daud, the prime accused in the Sharif Osman Hadi murder case, and his wife Shaheda Parvin Samia for allegedly embezzling and laundering Tk 1.93 crore.
The case was filed with Adabar Police Station yesterday afternoon by Abdul Latif, a sub-inspector of the CID's Financial Crime Unit, Officer-in-Charge Jahidul Islam Jahangir said.
According to the case statement, the investigation was launched following an intelligence report from the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
The investigation found that Faisal, along with two to three unidentified accomplices, allegedly embezzled Tk 1,93,01,500 through fake government tenders, promises of joint business ventures and purchases of goods on credit from various individuals and businesses.
CID found that the allegedly illicit funds were routed through multiple bank accounts, including those of Faisal's wife, to conceal their source and illegal origin.
Citing information from NCB Abu Dhabi, the case statement said Faisal holds a multiple-entry tourist visa for the United Arab Emirates and returned to Bangladesh from Dubai on February 12, 2023. CID suspects that part of the proceeds of the alleged crimes may have been laundered to Dubai and invested there.
According to the case statement, CID investigators reviewed bank statements, deposit and withdrawal vouchers, written statements from victims and other documents and found evidence of the embezzlement, transfer, handover and conversion of Tk 1,93,01,500 by Faisal and two to three unidentified accomplices.
Faisal was arrested along with his alleged associate Alamgir Hossain, 34, by India's West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) from Bongaon in West Bengal on March 8. The STF said the two had illegally entered India.
According to the STF, the two were arrested following intelligence that they had fled Bangladesh after being involved in serious crimes.
