Govt will assist in speedy trial of Opratim killing, says home minister
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today expressed his hope that the trial of 13-year-old Ishiat Shahriar Opratim would be completed soon, like the trial of the rape and murder of Ramisa in Dhaka’s Pallabi.
“The court will conduct the trial, and we will assist it in completing all legal formalities, including submitting the charge sheet,” he told reporters at the Secretariat this afternoon.
“We hope the judiciary will take steps to conclude the trial as soon as possible, as was done in the case of Ramisa’s killing,” he added.
The home minister said the death of the son of a Comilla University teacher had shocked the nation. He praised the police for arresting all the accused and recovering evidence within 12 hours of the incident.
At least four people, all members of a teen gang, were arrested and had already admitted to the crime, Salahuddin said.
The accused are 5-10 years older than Opratim. They had good relations with him and often spent time together, he added.
Meanwhile, Opratim was buried today after two separate namaz-e-janazas.
His body was recovered yesterday afternoon, nearly 24 hours after he went missing from the Kotbari-Gandhamati area of Cumilla city.
Opratim was the only son of Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Bangla Department at Comilla University, and KM Firoz Shahriar, a businessman living in Ward 24 of the Kotbari-Gandhamati area.
He was a Class VII student at Border Guard Public School.
