Mariam’s death: Abetment case against Gazi Nazrul handed to DB

The case filed over the alleged abetment of suicide of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife, Mariam Khatun, has been handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police for investigation.

Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarker of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station said the case was transferred to the DB last night.

“The accused are now in DB custody,” he said.

Police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday evening. Later that night, police took Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, into custody for questioning.

A Dhaka court yesterday granted four days’ remand for Nazrul and one day for Maksuda in the case.

Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, filed the case on Sunday against Nazrul and two others on charges of abetting the death of Mariam.

On July 22, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled the Satkhira-4 MP from the party after an internal investigation found evidence of “moral misconduct”.

The party took the decision after video clips involving Gazi Nazrul and a young woman circulated on social media. Then, Gazi Nazrul and members of his family said the woman was his second wife.
