Man arrested over alleged attempt to rape schoolgirl in Jashore

Police arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly attempting to rape a class-seven student in Abhaynagar upazila of Jashore last night.

The victim’s mother filed a case against Olikul of Chandipur village with Abhaynagar Police Station over the alleged attempted rape, said Officer-in-Charge Md Nuruzzaman.

Olikul will be produced before a court today, he said.

According to police and local sources, the 14-year-old girl was looking for her younger brother in front of her house in Payra village around 8:00pm when Olikul allegedly took her by force to a nearby garden.

He allegedly attempted to rape her there, but her screams drew the attention of a neighbour, Priyananda Sarker, who rushed to the spot.

Sensing his presence, Olikul allegedly tried to flee. But locals, however, managed to capture him and informed police.

Police later went to the scene, took Olikul into custody and brought him to Abhaynagar Police Station.

The girl was taken to a local hospital for a medical examination.
