Gopalganj’s centuries-old boat race draws thousands

There is no organiser, formal committee, or prize arrangement, yet the centuries-old traditional ‘Baghiar Boat Race’ continues to draw thousands of spectators in Gopalganj.

The race was held yesterday at Babur khal in Kaliganj under Kalabari union of Kotalipara upazila, marking Vishwakarma Puja. Boat owners participated on their own initiative.

The race is held twice a year -- for a day during Vishwakarma Puja and for three consecutive days during Lakshmi Puja.

Around 20 boats took part in several rounds along a nearly two-kilometre stretch from Kaliganj Bazar to Khejurbari. The canal came alive with kanshi and nakara drums (traditional local instruments) and the rowers’ chants of “heiyo”. The races continued from noon until evening.

Locals said the boat race was originally held at Baghiar beel in neighbouring Rumnagar, from where it got its name. Around 30–35 years ago, the race was moved to Babur khal after the water level at the beel declined.

Although the venue has changed, the tradition has continued for more than a century through spontaneous participation by local people.

Harasit Sarkar, 63, of Rajoir in Madaripur, said boats from his area also participated.

“The race has been held since the time of our fathers and grandfathers. I have been coming to watch it since my childhood,” he said.

Mrinmoy Baroi, 65, another spectator, said the race had once been famous across Bangladesh.

“It was held even before I was born. Since it was previously held at Baghiar beel, it was called the ‘Baghiar Boat Race’. Now that it is held in Kaliganj, many people call it the ‘Kaliganj Boat Race’,” he said.

Sulta Puista, who has watched the race for 16 years, said it felt like a festival.

“Many people come, and there are opportunities to shop, ride the Ferris wheel and enjoy different kinds of food. To us, the boat race feels like a festival,” she said.

Bijon Biswas, chairman of Kalabari Union Parishad, said boat owners participate voluntarily.

“There is no organising committee here. Boat owners come with their boats and participate voluntarily. It is part of our own heritage and a source of wholesome entertainment,” he said.

He said people of all faiths come together to enjoy the race.

The boat race was also held at Babur khal last year as part of the long-running tradition.
