German parliamentary delegation visits MGI economic zone

A parliamentary delegation from the Bundestag, the federal parliament of Germany, yesterday visited the Meghna Industrial Economic Zone (MIEZ) to explore avenues for deepening trade, investment and industrial cooperation between Germany and Bangladesh.

The delegation visited key facilities at MIEZ, including two German-owned factories — CHT Bangladesh Limited and Siegwerk Bangladesh Limited. Most factories within the zone rely on German machinery and technology, reflecting the strong industrial ties between the two countries.

Mostafa Kamal, chairman and managing director of Meghna Group of Industries (MGI), welcomed the delegation, according to a press release.

Nicklas Kappe, a member of the Bundestag, led the delegation. He was accompanied by Gerold Otten, colonel (retd) and a member of the Bundestag; Johann Saathoff and Ursula Schauws; members of the Bundestag; Anja Katerina Elisabeth Bienert, an accompanying officer from the Administration of the German Bundestag; and interpreter Max Doerfler.

“It is encouraging to see the strong presence of German industry and technology at MIEZ,” Nicklas said.

“Visits like this reaffirm the depth of the economic partnership between Germany and Bangladesh, and we look forward to seeing this cooperation grow further,” he added.

Mostafa said Germany has long been one of Bangladesh’s key economic and development partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, health and energy as well as trade, investment and human resource development.

“MIEZ is Bangladesh’s most modern private economic zone. It offers uninterrupted power, gas and water supply, reliable security, waste management and its own firefighting system,” he said, inviting German investors to expand their investments in the zone.

The delegation was accompanied by Rüdiger Lotz, the German ambassador to Bangladesh, and officials from the German Embassy in Dhaka.

MGI is also developing Comilla Economic Zone and Titas Economic Zone. Companies from Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, India, China, Belgium and the United States have established factories in MGI’s economic zones.
